Walking our way out of Lockdown

Walking our way out of Lockdown

Posted: 15th March 2021

Since walking is pretty much all we have been able to do throughout lockdown here in the Witterings, we wanted to share some of our favourite routes for you to enjoy on your next visit.

With miles of coastline right on our doorstep, we are spoilt for choice when it comes to coastal walks and it’s something the whole family have been able to enjoy together.

Our beautiful golden retrievers, Jessie & Maisie love the beach too – in fact, we have to drag them out of the water as they love it so much. The Wellies & Windbreaks team also grew by one more over lockdown. Little Laki, a gorgeous yellow Labrador Retriever, will soon be exploring the beaches with us and is already desperate to join her friends in the sea!

East & West Wittering Beach

The National Trust’s East Head at the end of West Wittering beach is a gorgeous place to walk and enjoy the wildlife in the sand dunes. Just bear in mind that there are some restrictions for dogs in summer. From May to September, you can take your dog on the beach, but you must be outside groynes 14A-18. The good news is that dogs are allowed everywhere on the beach between the end of September to the end of April.

A map of the beach can be seen here.

If you walk further east down the coastal path from East Wittering, you will reach the next village, Bracklesham Bay. Still on the same stretch of water with views out across the Solent and towards the Isle of Wight, you will eventually hit the beach front café “Billy’s on the Beach” – perfect for a coffee pit stop en-route!

RSPB Medmerry

The mudflats at RSPB Medmerry in Sidlesham offer a lovely walking route. Medmerry is a ‘wild and wonderful’ reserve offering long walks and cycle rides through an amazing landscape of panoramic views and glorious sunsets. Medmerry is just a stone’s throw from neighbouring Pagham Harbour and linked by public footpaths.

Salterns Way

Salterns Way is a great route for all the family from Chichester to the sand dunes at East Head (or in reverse!). The route follows rural roads and cycle paths through the countryside and much of this is along car-free, safe (and flat) tracks making it great for families to enjoy on foot or push bike.

A full map and trail guide can be downloaded here.

Further Afield

We’re lucky to have tons more walking routes slightly further afield including Bosham and Itchenor. Walking Britain has a great walk-finding function – just pop your postcode in and discover the best routes to explore near-by!

What Our Clients Say
Guest at Number Twenty Four
This was a very special year for myself and my husband and part of our celebrations was bringing together three generations for a family holiday – so we were looking for special accommodation and Number 24 did not disappoint. Thank you Amanda for your clear and helpful communication – we hope to holiday with Windbreaks and Wellies in the future
Guest at Sherkin
What a lovely big house. We loved our stay at Sherkin. Lovely position, very central to everything which made everything so simple. Beautiful wittering Beaches 100m. Pet friendly which was a bonus. We are going to miss our daily dog walks so most definitely going to book again. Amanda and Angela were brilliant looking after us. Thank you.

This is the second time we have stayed in Beachcomber. It is a very specious and well equipped house and the location is excellent. The response to any queries or help is swift. It’s everything you need for a great family holiday.
Gillian Morrison, Property Owner
Amanda is such a pleasure to deal with. She is super efficient and nothing is too much bother. Whether its taking bookings, dealing with cleaners or other management aspects, Amanda is incredibly quick to get onto things and never lets anything drop. Always on. And always with a smile!
Guest at Pebbles West Wittering
We stayed at Pebbles in West Wittering with our 18-month-old and it might be the best staycation we’ve ever done. We will 100% be returning. We’ve never stayed anywhere this well equipped - it has everything you need and definitely feels like a home from home. The house is beautifully furnished and decorated, super clean and the kitchen has anything you could need from a dishwasher to cling film to coffee machine. Our son was entertained the whole time with the toys provided inside and outside, which made our stay that bit easier for us and more special for him. The location is brilliant, with an easy flat walk to the beach and close to the little shops. We can’t believe we’ve never actually visited West Wittering before - the beach is amazing! Now we have somewhere we love to stay, we’ll certainly be back here!
